Tattoo size and timing

On this page, you'll find examples of common tattoo sizes and rough estimates of how long they may take to complete.

Tattooing time depends on several factors, including the size, complexity of the design, level of detail and placement on the body. Some areas take longer to tattoo because of differences in skin texture, sensitivity and how easy the area is to work on.

Both colour and black & grey tattoos can be time-consuming. Colour tattoos may require more layering and fuller coverage, while black & grey designs with detailed textures and shading can take just as long. The overall design and level of detail play a much bigger role in determining how long a tattoo takes than the choice between colour and black & grey.

Please keep in mind that these are general estimates. Every tattoo is different, and the actual time may vary.

One full-day session, colour, 5-6 hours

One full-day session, black and grey, 5-6 hours

Two full-day sessions, 10-12 hours

A sleeve tattoo (full wrap-around arm or leg) in black and grey takes a minimum of 4 full-day sessions, 20+ hours.

Colour sleeve takes a minimum of 6 full-day sessions, 30+ hours (final time depends on design, details, colours, and the size of the arm/leg)
